From May 2023 to May 2025, we implemented a survey across the United States and Canada to collect information from Indigenous food businesses about their operations.

Initial Data Collection

Our research team identified Indigenous food businesses across North America using Google searches, the Indigenous Agriculture Council (IAC) database, and state Indigenous business directories. We then accessed their websites and collected information on the following characteristics:

 

  • Geographic location;

  • Whether the business operated multiple sites within the same geographic location;

  • Physical address;

  • Type of business (store/market, wholesaler, retailer, food service, educational program, food bank, or community supported agriculture program);

  • IAC certification status;

  • Tribal affiliation;

  • Tribal recognition (state, federal, or non-recognized);

  • Food sourcing (self-produced, supplier, manufacturer, or wholesaler); and

  • Type of food sold
