Indigenous Foodways Workshop & Feast

November 3rd, 2024

Hosted by Troy Wiipongwii and the Traditional Eastern Woodland Foodways Allianceparticipants learned about the intersection of Indigenous foodways and nutrition, and enjoyed a feast of traditional dishes prepared by Indigenous culinary educators.

Indigenous Data Governance Strategy for Tribal Governments: Highlighting Dimensions, Objectives, and Key Results

At the 2024 U.S. Indigenous Data Sovereignty & Governance Summit in Tucson, AZ, Troy Wiipongwii presented a framework that tribal governments can use to implement a robust data governance protocol. ​
It highlights data assessments, human capital, existing and necessary infrastructure, data quality, financial considerations, and a culture of innovation around data governance. This framework highlights objectives and key results to help tribal leaders assess where the tribes are and where they are going. This research builds on previous recommendations of Indigenous data governance policy briefings and publications. As a final element, the research explores several configurations of information and communication technology infrastructure for tribal governments.

Cooking Demonstration and Food Drive

February 8th, 2023

Troy Wiipongwii's collaborative Food Literacy Program with the Baltimore American Indian Center aims to boost food security, health, and entrepreneurship among Indigenous communities in Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia. Monthly cooking classes led by Indigenous chefs explore historical, nutritional, and environmental aspects of food, while also distributing locally sourced produce to 25 families in need. By reclaiming Indigenous foodways and promoting sustainable practices, the program fosters community resilience and empowerment.

VTEC Conference: Preserving Our Legacy Through Education

At the 2023 Virginia Tribal Education Consortium (VTEC) conference, Troy Wiipongwii spoke about the history of Indigneous food in Virginia from the Pleistocene Epoch to today, emphasizing how the landscape and ecosystems shaped the variety of foods available. He also prepared and served a four-sisters soup, showcasing a variety of indigenous ingredients and explaining when each one became part of our diet over time.

Maryland Indian Affairs Commission Public Meeting

February 6th, 2023

Troy Wiipongwii and Zach Conrad were invited to deliver a presentation at the Maryland Indian Affairs Commission Public Meeting, where they outlined their strategy to engage with tribal and Urban Indian communities, emphasizing the importance of respectful data collection practices. 

Indigenous Peoples Feast

October 8th, 2023

The inaugural Indigenous Peoples Feast, hosted by Troy Wiipongwii, brought together culinary educators, tribal leaders, environmentalists, and community members to support and celebrate Indigenous food sovereignty. This included presentations by Joe Rocchi, Lonnie Custalow, Ben Fritton, and Beth Roach, as well as group discussions and, of course, Indigenous food!

VTEC Conference: Sovereignty Through Education

November 5th, 2022

At the 2022 Virginia Tribal Education Consortium (VTEC) conference, Troy Wiipongwii, Zach Conrad, and Matthias Leu introduced the Indigenous Food Systems project and received helpful feedback from tribal leaders and community members.
